13 months!

My sweet baby boy – you are 13 months old.  After you hit one year, time seems to be slowing down just a tad bit.  Well, maybe not slowing down, but I don’t feel the same panic of time passing us by too quickly as I did before.  I was dreading that one year mark, I really was.  Now that it’s passed, it’s freeing.  We can just go on with life, enjoying the milestones as they arrive.

You are really full of fun these days, despite your serious face in all the photos!  You’re walking so well.  I love watching you toddle all over the house, pivoting and turning smoothly to change direction.  You throw your arms up in the air with elbows bent at a 90 degree angle for balance, and you usually have a huge smile on your face as if to say, “Look at me, Mama!”.  You love taking your walker out on the road – all around the neighborhood, in fact – but you really wish it had off-road tires.  You’re constantly trying to push it across the neighbor’s lawns, or into the woods, and get really impatient when it won’t GO.  Today, you kept pushing the walker aside and just taking off without it, so I think you’ll be cruising the neighborhood on your own pretty soon.

You love climbing stairs – you’ll do it all day long if I let you.  We taught you how to climb down backwards and you can go up and down (with Mama close by in case you fall) all by yourself!

I scored a bike trailer off Crai.gs.list and I’m pretty psyched to start taking you on rides on our local trails.  So far, we’ve only ridden it around the cul-de-sac a few times, but I’m hoping we get some real riding in this weekend.

You love to move so much now, that sitting still is torture.  You scream bloody murder for diaper changes and nail cutting, causing your Mimi to come running every time, thinking you’ve fallen and bonked your head.  You will sit in your chair for breakfast and dinner, but for lunch we have to feed you on the go.  I follow you around the house and shovel bites of food in your mouth as often as you’ll let me.  Or you’ll walk over and grab a few pieces of cheese and toddle on your merry way, coming back a few minutes later when you’re ready for another bite.  You are a really independent little guy when it comes to eating.  You want to feed yourself – even your yogurt.  I’ve figured out the perfect solution – yogurt in a cup!  Filled half full, you can slurp it up all by yourself!  You tend to eat two or three times as much food when you get to feed yourself, so Mama is happy to oblige.

You’re still nursing when you wake up in the morning, before your two naps, and before bedtime.  Lately, you’ve only been waking up once a night to nurse, and I sure am glad for all the extra sleep :) .  Occasionally, we’ll nurse when you fall down or bump into something, or when you’re just plain grumpy from all those teeth coming in (you’ve got one new one and 7 more on the way!), and it never fails to bring a smile to your face after only a couple minutes in Mama’s arms.

You understand so much now, that I am constantly amazed.  You have a play cell phone that you hold up to your ear when we say “hello?” (You also do it with my cell phone when you get your hands on it).  You recognize doggies and say “woof” (or ‘oof) when you see them.  You can yell for more food, although it usually sounds like “mo mo” (and boy are you impatient).  The berries on our mulberry tree are ripening – you point up to the branches every time we walk underneath it and ask for “mo mo”.  I wonder how I’ll explain why there’s no yummy berries in a couple weeks when they’re all gone?  You can say Dada and Mama, and are finally starting to connect those words to us.  When I hand you a clean diaper, you instantly push it down between your legs – you know where it goes!  You definitely understand the word “no”, and you’re getting pretty good at obeying without too much fussing.  You don’t even attempt to climb out the doggy door anymore (whew!), although you insist on dumping the doggy’s water dishes over the second before I can get over there to stop you.

You got a new drum yesterday, and you love playing it and carrying the drumsticks around.  Your Auntie had a real drum set in her apartment and you got to play them last week, so you were pretty psyched to beat on your little play drum.  You are such a musical little guy – you absolutely love strumming Daddy’s guitar, and you get really excited when music comes on.  Your favorite song right now is “Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys.  As soon as I walk over to turn the CD on, you start jumping up and down with excitement.  You can sing along pretty well – “Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba” – and you clap your hands and roll around on the floor with glee every time you hear it.  You also love the American Idol theme song, but I blame your Mimi for that one ;)

You’re such a big boy now!  I’m finally getting used to seeing you with your hair shorter, although I may have shed a tear or two when looking at old photos.  It may be a while before anyone convinces me to cut your hair again…

I love you little man, and look forward to everything this next month will bring!

A weekend away

The weekend before Isaac’s birthday (yes, I’m posting backwards in time), we were lucky enough to spend two days at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor.  Thanks to my wonderful mom, who won us the getaway, we had a lovely time and a really relaxing weekend!

Mom and Rachel babysat while Isaac was sleeping, so we could get out and watch a baseball game, or go out to dinner – not one but TWO nights in a row.  We spent the unseasonably warm days walking along the waterfront, taking in all the sights.  I forgot my camera, but luckily Chris had a decent camera on his phone.

I don’t even like candy, but this store was the cutest!

Self-portrait by phone – not exactly a success:

Oh well.  Despite having Mom and Rachel around, we didn’t manage to get a picture of the three of us.  I need to get better at remembering to bring the camera!

Overall, it was a fantastic weekend.  From the chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne in our room at check-in to the fantastic restaurants in the hotel and downtown, it was an amazing place to visit.  Isaac loved cruising around town and meeting lots of new people.  He made friends everywhere – especially with all of our female waitresses ;) .  We definitely want to go back – we didn’t even have a chance to try out the pool!  And they are building the National Children’s Museum right next door, which I’m pretty excited about.

Thanks Mom, for the great weekend away!

more birthday pics

Isaac’s actual birthday was a bit rainy, so we headed to the mall for a special treat for the birthday boy – a train ride!

First, we had lunch at Nando’s Peri Peri:

Then, it was train time!

That evening, we had a birthday dinner for the little guy, with his first ever dessert on the menu – cheesecake!  He isn’t really a fan of sweets, other than fruit, but he enjoyed playing in it, spreading it around, and licking the plate :) .

After the cheesecake fun, Isaac opened a couple presents:

And then we took his one year stats-

Measuring his height on parchment paper (don’t mind the box of matches he was allowed to hold so he would stay still ;) ):

Hopping on the scale:

And that was how we spent Isaac’s birthday!  I meant to put these up before his party pics, but I just never got around to it.  Oh well, better late than never :) .

Birthday party

Isaac slept in on the day of his party, waking up at 9:15! As I brought him downstairs, he was rubbing sleep out of his eyes, then staring in amazement and wonder at all of the colorful decorations Mom and I had put up the night before. He pointed and ooh’ed and aah’ed with the biggest smile on his face at the giant honeycomb balls.

He was thrilled when everyone gathered ’round and sang “Happy Birthday” and had a huge smile on his face the whole time.  He gave his best effort to blow out his candle, but couldn’t quite get it (Mama had to help out).

He had his very first taste of sugar (just a teeny taste, mind you), but his real dessert was his favorite – strawberries – with some tasty ice cream from the farm.

After playing, eating lunch, and chowing down on dessert, Uncle Ben brought out the pinata!  The kiddos all got to take a whack at it – several whacks, in fact.

After all the excitement of the pinata, Isaac took a moment to cuddle with his Mama.

Our friends’ daughter took a shine to Isaac, and gave him a couple smooches.  He loved it…and leaned in for more!

It was a lovely day.  Isaac really enjoyed himself – he loves being around people and especially enjoyed following the big kids around.  It just amazes me to think that a year ago to the day, I was meeting my son for the very first time.  What a wonderful thing to be celebrating my little guy’s first year!

We are truly blessed.

My baby turns 1

My dear sweet baby boy,

You are ONE.  You are all of sudden looking more like a little boy and less like a baby every day.  I’m pretty sure I’m going to cry on Friday when I take you for your first haircut.  I’m pretty sure that will push you over the edge into toddlerhood.  Well, that and the fact that you took your first steps this week.  Oh, and the new sound of your talking – almost overnight it’s starting to sound more like garbled chatter than baby babbling.  How did we get here so fast?

I could smooch this face all day long

You, my boy, are the sweetest little guy there is.  You hand out hugs generously, and kisses as well.  I love how cuddly you are right after you’ve woke up from your nap – you cling to your Mama for quite a while before clambering to get down and play.  You LOVE to meet new people.  You are a total ham, and a flirt!  You love a pretty girl, but can make fast friends with all the guys too, by flashing your pearly whites and laughing your little chipmunk laugh you save for when you’re highly amused.

You are the happiest when you’re on the go, crawling around and exploring your world.  And you are ALWAYS on the move.  You can barely sit still for nursing these days, needing to climb down and explore pronto!  I can only imagine how much life is going to change as soon as this walking thing takes off…your Mama will try her best to keep up :) .

out the door

caught in the act

You didn’t gain any weight from 11 months to 12, but you grew in length, that’s for sure!  You’re still 23 lbs, but are now 29 1/2″ long.  And you’re most decidedly in 18 months sizes now…even 24 in some brands.  If you keep this up, you’ll be in “T” sizes before the end of the summer.  And Mama will definitely shed a tear then.

feeding himself

As much as I want to freeze time right now, holding this moment close forever so I don’t forget a bit of it, every day is bringing something new.  And it sure is exciting.  You are learning so quickly – whether it’s to blow kisses, or repeating a new sound, or how to finally turn your walker in the direction you want to go without any help.  It’s amazing to see how your mind works.  You look for humor in every situation – you will take any excuse to laugh – and love to get everyone around you in on the joke.  Peekaboo has taken on a whole new level lately – you will play peekaboo with anyone (even the doggy) and anywhere and usually you’re the one initiating the game.  You are such a cheery fellow, even when you’re teething.  Those mean ole’ teeth keep coming in (your 5th one is on it’s way).  Your default expression is a huge grin, although you’ve been practicing your fish face (I call it your kissy face) a lot lately.

cheese!

You love to play with the doggies…as much as they’ll let you.  You throw the ball for Eddie, and you steal the dog bones.  You also love to commandeer the dog beds.  They’re soft and squishy and perfect for rolling around on!

relaxin'

stuck!

You still love the outdoors more than anything.  I love walking you down the street in your little car, with you waving at everyone we pass and babbling brightly at all the neighborhood squirrels and birds.  You bounce up and down in your seat with excitement when you see something new, or when we race down the hilly part of the driveway.  You do love a thrill!

why do you insist on putting flowers in my hair?

You are such a joy to me, my little man.  You bring such smiles to my face and a thrill to my soul every single day.  I am so excited to see the little boy you are becoming, so bright and curious and happy.  I can hardly believe that you were once this small:

And now look at you!

I love you so much.  Happy 1st birthday Isaac!

Isaac’s first Easter

We had beautiful weather for Easter.  Perfect weather for a family photo!  Out of about a hundred tries, we got ONE where all three of us were looking at the camera.  Whew, it is a lot harder to get Isaac to look at the camera than it used to be.  Forget about smiling, lol.

I guess all you need is one good shot, though :) .

We were using the guitar to distract Isaac enough to sit down with us.  It didn’t really work as we planned:

We tried shots in front of the azaleas, but it was too sunny and everyone was squinting…and shots in front of the burning bushes, but Isaac was more interested in grabbing leaves than smiling for the camera.  Sigh…I guess he really is almost a toddler.  *quiet sob*

After the torture of family pictures, we went on a nice walk.  Isaac got to ride in his new toy – an early birthday present from Mama and Dada.  He LOVES his new car!

zoom zoom!

whatcha lookin' at?

gotta taste it

Isaac got his first Easter basket!

We had a lovely meal with the fam – rack of lamb, roasted beets, rainbow carrots with butter and mashed sweet potato.  And homemade gf carrot cake cupcakes with maple cream cheese frosting for dessert.  Yum!

It was a lovely day!
